Luckily, if you’re a mobile user in the United States, you are some of the least likely users to be affected by malware world wide (estimated to be between 0.2% and 2%). However, it’s important to follow these best practices to ensure you’re protecting your mobile device and not part of the 2%:
- “Choose a unique password or PIN to protect the information on your device.
- Avoid unfamiliar Internet links in SMS or email messages.
- Use security software and download apps only from known and trusted sources.
- Review app permissions and opt-in requirements BEFORE downloading & using them.
- Vary unique passwords across sensitive applications such as mobile wallet, connected health or other applications that contain sensitive personal information.
- Only connect to secure networks, especially with the rise of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). A fake Wi-Fi network could be a “honey-pot” for information and infiltration of unprotected apps.
- Back up the device’s information (to PC or Cloud Service) in the event that it may need to be wiped and restored to factory settings.”
